5 Best Hikes in Maryland

Maryland is a growing small town near the Potomac River. I’ve done everything from rafting down the river to hiking the Appalachian Mountains, and I’ve hiked almost every trail in Maryland I could find.

In this post, I’ll show you some of the best hikes in Maryland so you can discover the state’s natural beauty. But before you head out, don’t forget to pack a lunch or some good snacks. Trust me, you don’t want to hike for hours to see a great view, only to leave early because you’re hungry!

1. Annapolis Rock

  • Location: South Mountain, Maryland
  • Distance: 5 miles round trip
  • Elevation Gain: 1,070 feet
  • Difficulty: Moderate

The trailhead starts at the parking lot on Route 40, with a gradual incline leading to the scenic overlook at Annapolis Rock. The trail is well-maintained, with clear markers, and follows a portion of the AT, making it a well-trodden path. There are opportunities to extend the hike further along the AT for more adventurous hikers.

Activities:

Hiking: The main activity with a rewarding scenic overlook at the top.

Camping: There’s a designated campsite near Annapolis Rock for those looking to stay overnight.

Photography: Annapolis Rock offers incredible views of the valleys and mountains—perfect for landscape photography.

2. Great Falls Overlook Loop Trail

  • Location: Great Falls Park, Maryland
  • Distance: 4 miles round trip
  • Elevation Gain: 300 feet
  • Difficulty: Easy to Moderate

Starting from the visitor center, the trail loops around the falls and features a combination of boardwalks, dirt paths, and some rocky sections. It passes several overlooks, including the Great Falls Overlook, which is one of the most iconic viewpoints in the park.

Activities:

Picnicking: Several picnic areas along the trail offer great spots for relaxing and enjoying a meal.

Birdwatching and Wildlife Viewing: The area around Great Falls is home to various bird species and small mammals.

3. Cascade Falls Loop Trail

  • Location: Patapsco Valley State Park, Maryland
  • Distance: 2.3 miles round trip
  • Elevation Gain: 236 feet
  • Difficulty: Easy

The trailhead begins at the Orange Grove Area parking lot. It is a well-marked, looping trail that passes through shaded woods, with some small streams along the way. The highlight is the 10-15 foot Cascade Falls, a popular spot for cooling off or simply relaxing by the water.

Activities:

Hiking: A great trail for beginners or families with young children.

Picnicking: There are picnic tables near the trailhead, making it easy to enjoy a post-hike meal.

Nature Viewing: Abundant with wildlife and various plant species.

Water Play: Kids and families often splash around in the creek near Cascade Falls during warmer months.

4. Wolf Rock and Chimney Rock Loop Trail

  • Location: Catoctin Mountain Park, Maryland

  • Elevation Gain: 850 feet
  • Difficulty: Moderate

The loop begins at the Catoctin Mountain Park Visitor Center and climbs gradually to Wolf Rock, a massive quartzite formation with great views of the forested valleys below. From there, the trail continues to Chimney Rock, which offers even more spectacular panoramic views. The trail is rocky and uneven at times but well-marked.
